![]() It should be tried on a case-by-case basis. This product category is too vast to generalize. Some types of toothpaste have a higher thermal conductivity than others. ![]() Obviously not all toothpastes are suitable for the purpose. However, with a little 90% alcohol and cotton wool these stains can be eliminated. At the time of its removal, small spots may be seen on the metal. It will work, in theory, for 3-4 months but it is better to keep the situation under control and replace it every 15-30 days. ![]() Fill a syringe with the mixture obtained and apply a thin layer on the CPU (or even on the heatsink on the contact side). The mixture must be mixed for at least 5 minutes (see figure 5). Vaseline grease has the task of preventing toothpaste from drying out. It is also possible to add a little vaseline, in these proportions: Its structure decays after a few days, especially if the operating temperatures are high. Toothpaste is also an excellent substitute for thermal paste. The processor has kept its temperature low for the whole operating time (in Idle mode around 31° C and in “under load” mode around 40° C).įigure 4: cocoa and hazelnut spreads are a good temporary substitute for thermal paste Toothpaste Some “load” tests of about 15 minutes have shown a good functioning of these pastes. Remember that their use must not be beyond 2-3 days. Cocoa and hazelnut creamĬocoa and hazelnut spreads, thanks to their soft consistency, are ideal for making a valid thermal paste (see figure 4). The temperatures could be detected using sensors or a thermal camera. For those wishing to go deeper into the experiments, a good idea could be to build a thermal device that simulates the CPU temperature, using a heating plate and an adequate heat sink. Let’s look at some more interesting examples. The decay time of alternative products, in fact, is extremely short and after a few hours of operation they could evaporate and no longer provide the desired result. It is, therefore, necessary to apply the commercial thermal paste as soon as possible. It is important to say that the proposed solutions are valid for a few hours or days. If necessary, thermal paste can be replaced with other oily substances that can be easily found at home. The micro imperfections must be filled with thermal paste to eliminate these air bubbles. With the presence of air bubbles, the work of the heatsink is useless. They are not empty but full of air, which is a very bad heat conductor. ![]() Inevitably, there are very small empty spaces between the two faces. Thermal paste has the fundamental task of building a thermal bridge between the CPU (or other integrated and power circuits) and the heat sink. Since air is a bad heat conductor, the CPU does not cool properly.įigure 3: Some thermal simulations In case of emergency The thermal paste has the function of filling the microscopic imperfections of the surfaces in contact, which inevitably retain the air particles (see figure 1). There are many viable and cheap, easy to find alternatives, to temporarily solve the problem. If you don’t have thermal paste available, you shouldn’t despair. Without the thermal paste, air bubbles would form which would limit the passage of heat, even if the two parts are in close contact. The main function of thermal paste is to help the CPU (or other chips) transferring heat to the heatsink. Often, those who assemble computers forget to use it and apply the heatsink directly to the CPU. Thermal paste has a vital importance, even if many people do not realize how useful it is. In this article we will see how to usefully replace the thermal paste with some different, easily available and inexpensive material. It is a fundamental component because it helps cooling the CPU temperature down, lowering the thermal resistance between the microprocessor and the heat sink. Very often, assemblers and computer repairers do not have thermal paste available. ![]()
